A camera above the front door may record who enters a building, but it will not necessarily show a vehicle registration number, a till transaction or the route someone takes through a stock area. That distinction is where many CCTV projects go wrong. Knowing how to plan CCTV coverage means starting with the incidents you need to prevent, investigate or manage – then designing the system around them.
For small and mid-sized businesses, a well-planned system can deter opportunist crime, support staff safety and provide useful evidence when something goes wrong. A poorly planned one can leave costly blind spots, create privacy concerns and fill storage with footage that is not clear enough to use.
How to plan CCTV coverage around business risks
Start by walking the premises as if you were investigating an incident the following morning. Consider entrances, exits, delivery points, car parks, reception areas, tills, stock rooms, server rooms and any external areas where staff may work alone. The aim is not to put a camera in every corner. It is to understand what needs to be seen, from where, and to what level of detail.
Write down the questions you would need footage to answer. For example: who entered through a side door, did a delivery vehicle arrive at the agreed time, what happened at a loading bay, or can a face be identified at reception? Each question points to a different camera position and image requirement.
This also helps separate genuine priorities from assumptions. A warehouse may need clear coverage of goods-in and goods-out rather than general views of every aisle. Decide what each camera must achieve

Look up as well as across. Trees grow, signs are installed, racking changes and parked vans can block views that looked clear on installation day. Indoors, suspended lighting, fire doors and tall storage can create unexpected blind spots. In busy areas, camera height and viewing angle should make it difficult for a person to hide behind another customer or member of staff.
It is sensible to mark likely camera positions on a drawing and test them on site before finalising the design. A temporary test camera can be especially valuable for complex entrances, large yards and low-light areas.
Choose cameras for the environment, not the catalogue
Camera specification should follow the coverage plan. Resolution matters, but it is not the only factor. A high-resolution camera fitted in the wrong place will not deliver useful evidence. Lens choice, low-light performance, dynamic range, mounting height and recording settings all affect the result.
For an office reception, a compact dome camera may provide an unobtrusive, wide view. A loading yard may require a weather-rated bullet camera with stronger night performance. A pan-tilt-zoom camera can help an authorised operator follow activity over a large area, but it should not replace fixed cameras recording critical points. While it is looking one way, it is not recording detail somewhere else.
Audio recording needs particular care. It can be appropriate in limited circumstances, but it is more intrusive than video and must be justified. For many businesses, clear video coverage and appropriate signage are the better starting point.
Plan the network, power and recording storage
CCTV is part of your business technology, not a stand-alone box on a wall. Cameras need reliable power, stable network capacity, secure configuration and enough recording storage. These considerations should be addressed before installation, particularly where a site already relies on Wi-Fi, cloud applications or voice services.
Wired Power over Ethernet connections are often the most dependable option for fixed cameras because one cable carries both power and data. Wi-Fi cameras can be practical where cabling is genuinely difficult, but they depend on consistent wireless coverage and should not be treated as the default for critical areas.
Storage requirements depend on the number of cameras, image quality, frame rate, activity levels and retention period. Recording every camera at maximum settings for months can be expensive and unnecessary. Motion-based recording can reduce storage use in quiet areas, while continuous recording may be more suitable for entrances, tills or high-value stock areas.
Decide who can view live footage, retrieve clips and change settings. Use individual logins where possible, strong passwords and restricted access. Remote viewing is useful for owners and managers, but it should be protected with appropriate access controls rather than left exposed for convenience.
Build privacy and data protection into the design
Business CCTV usually involves personal data, so coverage must be proportionate to a clear purpose. Avoid filming neighbouring property, public areas or staff spaces unless there is a valid reason and no less intrusive alternative. Cameras should not be installed in toilets, changing rooms or other areas where people reasonably expect privacy.
Clear signage should tell people that CCTV is in use and who operates it. Businesses should also have a straightforward process for handling footage requests and a defined retention period. Keeping recordings indefinitely is rarely necessary. Retention should reflect the risk, how quickly incidents tend to be reported and the space available, with footage retained longer only where it is relevant to an investigation.

Test coverage before signing off the installation
Do not judge a system by the live view alone. Test it against the situations it was designed for. Ask someone to walk through entrances at normal pace, stand at the reception desk, approach a gate after dark and move around likely concealment points. Then review the recorded footage, not just the screen image.
Check whether faces are clear enough at the required distance, whether the timestamp is accurate, whether vehicle details can be read where needed and whether important areas remain visible when lights change. Test playback, clip export and authorised remote access as well. A system that records well but cannot produce footage quickly when needed has not fully met its purpose.
Keep a record of camera locations, coverage purpose, login responsibilities, retention settings and maintenance dates. This makes future changes far easier, especially when premises are extended, layouts change or staff responsibilities move.
Treat CCTV as an ongoing service
Cameras collect dirt, cobwebs and moisture. Lenses can be knocked out of position, hard drives can fail, and a network fault can quietly stop recording. Regular checks are what turn an installation into dependable security.
A maintenance plan should include camera cleaning, recording checks, firmware and security updates where appropriate, storage health checks and confirmation that the correct time is displayed. Review coverage after a break-in, near miss, premises move or operational change.
